The natural reserve contains multiple memorials and mass graves from the 1937-1939 period, marking events of Soviet political repression.
The area connects to Saint Petersburg through two railway stations, Toksovo and Kavgolovo, with regular train services operating throughout the day.
The heights include a ski resort at Kavgolovo, which has hosted stages of the FIS Cross-country skiing World Cup competitions.
