Parnas, Historic district in northern Saint Petersburg, Russia
Parnas is a district in northern Saint Petersburg characterized mainly by modern residential areas with high-rise buildings. The area spreads around Shuvalovsky Park, where old park grounds sit alongside the newer housing blocks.
The area belonged to the noble Shuvalov family's summer estate in the late 18th century, when they created a park with an artificial hilly landscape. The housing settlements that now form most of the district appeared in the decades following the Soviet era.
The area takes its name from an artificial hill called Parnasskij that Count Shuvalov commissioned in the park, naming it after the Greek mountain. The grounds also contain the Shuvalov Palace, which served as the noble family's summer residence and can now be viewed from the outside.
The Parnas metro station sits at the northern end of the Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya line and provides a direct connection to the city center, which can be reached in about 30 minutes. The residential area itself is mainly designed for inhabitants, with few shops and facilities on the ground floors of the new buildings.
The Severnaya Dolina housing complex was built in eleven construction phases and forms one of the largest connected settlements in the city. The tallest towers reach 25 floors and dominate the entire surroundings with a clear view from afar.
