Izhorian museum

The Izhorian Museum contains artifacts and documents that detail the life of the Finno-Ugric people who inhabited the regions near the Gulf of Finland.

The museum, established in 1990 and officially opened in 1993, preserves the heritage of the Izhorian people whose population decreased from 30,000 to less than 1,000.

Traditional fishing practices, musical performances, and ancient customs of the Izhorian community are presented through exhibits and interactive demonstrations at the museum.

The museum receives approximately 1,500 visitors annually and offers guided tours led by local experts who share insights into Izhorian traditions and language.

Exhibits include traditional costumes decorated with cowrie shells, highlighting the extensive trade networks and cultural exchanges of the Izhorian people throughout history.
