Васили-Сарай, sanatorium in Crimea
Vasili-Saray is a historic estate in Yalta featuring neoclassical and modernist architecture built in the early 20th century. The property includes a main palace with asymmetrical design, arcaded windows, and balconies, along with smaller residential buildings set within a park of ancient cedars, cypresses, and oaks.
The estate was originally built by Prince Vasili Sergeievich Golitsyn in the early 1900s and took its name from the Crimean Tatar word for palace. Around 1912, it was completely redesigned following the owner's death, with a new neoclassical palace incorporating modernist elements.
The name "Vasili-Saray" comes from Crimean Tatar and means "Palace of Vasili". Visitors can see the mix of neoclassical and modernist architectural styles reflected in the buildings, showing how the estate served different purposes over time.
The estate sits about 200 meters from the shoreline, allowing easy access to the beach during visits. Note that access to the property is currently restricted, so check conditions beforehand before planning a visit to explore the grounds.
The palace was possibly designed by renowned architect Nikolai Krasnov, a celebrated creator of Crimean villas from that era. The fact that this significant architectural work is now privately owned and closed to the public makes it a hidden chapter in the local building history.
