The main building of the Warsaw University
The main building of the Warsaw University, Historical educational building in Rostov-on-Don, Russia
The main building of the Warsaw University is an Art Nouveau structure with graceful lines, sculptural facade elements, and ornamental details that define its appearance. Today it houses offices, classrooms, and administrative spaces for the Southern Federal University.
The building was constructed in 1914 as a municipal revenue office, but in 1915 it became the new home for the University evacuated from Warsaw during wartime. This transformation made it an important witness to European higher education history during the upheavals of the early 20th century.
The building reflects its past as a refuge for a displaced university and continues to shape how the institution sees itself today. The spaces bear witness to the encounter between Polish academic traditions and the Russian context in which they found shelter.
The building stands at the corner of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street and Ostrovsky Lane with good public transportation access. As an active educational institution, only certain areas may be open to visitors, so checking access times in advance is helpful.
In its early years, the building housed four different academic faculties simultaneously, including historical-philological, physical-mathematical, legal, and medical disciplines. This concentration made it a center where an entire university was rebuilt under one roof.
