Category:Viking ships in Vyborg, Monument at Naberezhnaya Sorokaletiya VLKSM, Vyborg, Russia.
The Viking ships installation consists of tall narrow panel vessels positioned along the waterfront of Vyborg Bay in the Gulf of Finland. These wooden structures stretch across several hundred meters and shape the harbor's appearance significantly.
The installation was built in 1985 specifically for the Soviet-Norwegian film 'Trees Grow on the Stones.' After filming ended, the vessels remained as a permanent art installation in Vyborg.
The ships reflect maritime traditions of Scandinavian sailors who traveled across Europe from the 8th through 11th centuries. They show how important the connection between Northern Europe and southern trade routes was.
Visitors can reach the ships by walking along the harbor promenade, which is easily accessible from the city center on foot. The area is flat and walkable, with several cafes and benches nearby for resting.
Nearby stands a bronze moose sculpture by Finnish artist Jussi Mäntünen, showing how the installation connects to Vyborg's wider art collection. This blend of Soviet and Scandinavian artistic creation makes the waterfront a special place of cultural exchange.
