Усадьба Поливанова, Classicist estate in Arbat District, Russia
The Polivanov Estate is a wooden classicist residence built on a stone foundation, featuring classical facade elements and decorative columns framing the entrance. The building preserves its original appearance from the 1820s and displays characteristic Empire style details from that period.
Lieutenant Alexander Polivanov acquired the former Kuznetsov courtyard in 1823 and commissioned architect Afanasy Grigoriev to design the new estate. The project was completed during Moscow's post-fire reconstruction period following the 1812 fire.
Between 1835 and 1837, the estate served as a gathering place for members of the Arzamas literary circle, where writers and thinkers exchanged ideas. The house became known for hosting these intellectual meetings that shaped Moscow's cultural life.
The federal cultural heritage site is located at 9/6 Denezhny Lane in Moscow's Arbat District and is easily accessible on foot. The wooden structure and classical details are visible from the street, though visiting the interior should be arranged in advance.
The estate is one of the few surviving examples of wooden Empire style architecture in Moscow from the post-1812 fire reconstruction period. Such well-preserved wooden buildings from this era have become extremely rare in the city.
