This settlement along the Prost River is an archaeological excavation site with cultural layers reaching 6 meters deep, revealing medieval residential structures and territorial divisions. The site covers roughly 700 square meters and shows how early Slavic communities organized their living spaces.
This settlement developed in the 7th century as one of the largest Slavic communities in the Ilmen region, predating the establishment of Veliky Novgorod by several centuries. It was gradually buried by river deposits, preserving its remains for later archaeological discovery.
The artifacts found here demonstrate how residents practiced metalworking, bone carving, and glassmaking as part of their daily lives. These crafts reveal the economic activities and practical skills that sustained the early Slavic community.
Access to the excavation site requires care since active digging continues and the ground can be uneven. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, as conditions depend on the weather.
Archaeologists discovered six birch bark manuscripts and eleven lead seals at this location, including one belonging to Prince Yaroslav Yaroslavich from the late 13th century. These written findings are rare and provide insight into administration and communication among early Slavic rulers.
