Fiholm, Historic castle estate in Västerås Municipality, Sweden
Fiholm is an estate with two grand wings built in French-Dutch Renaissance style on the shore of Lake Mälaren. Construction finished around 1642 and the buildings remain prominent features of the landscape.
A senior statesman commissioned a French architect in 1640 to design this property, with construction overseen by a Swedish master builder. Work on the southern wing finished relatively quickly while plans for a central structure never came to fruition.
The southern wing serves as a private home while keeping its architectural character intact. Group tours let visitors see how Swedish nobility lived in the past.
The grounds are open to visitors with a 19th-century barn housing a café and gift shop. Group tours can be arranged in advance by checking the official website before your visit.
The original design called for a central manor house that was never built, leaving just the two wings as evidence of abandoned plans. This state of incompleteness gives the place an unexpected quality.
