Kolbäcksån

Kolbäcksån is a river flowing across central Sweden from its source near Ludvika, traveling roughly 180 kilometers through rolling forests and farmland before joining Lake Mälaren. The waterway creates a natural corridor through the landscape, with several communities and natural areas positioned along its banks.

During the 1800s, the river powered numerous mills and factories that formed the backbone of the Bergslagen industrial region. The flowing water made this area a center for manufacturing and processing activities in Sweden.

Local fishing communities maintain traditional angling practices along the river, particularly focusing on rainbow trout and pike fishing methods.

The river is accessible at several points along its course, with parking areas positioned at convenient locations for visitors. Walking paths run alongside the water at key spots, making it easy to explore on foot.

For much of its journey, the river flows alongside the Strömsholm Canal, a historic waterway that was built centuries ago. This unusual pairing creates two water routes running nearly parallel through the forest and farmland.
