Rö Church, Medieval church in Norrtälje Municipality, Sweden.
Rö Church is a stone structure with Gothic architecture built from roughly hewn stones, featuring a single nave and decorated medieval brick vaults inside. The cemetery entrance is marked by a lychgate combined with a bell tower built in 1806, which houses two 18th-century bells.
The building was constructed in the second half of the 13th century, replacing an earlier wooden church on the site. Around 1475, painted brick vaults were added to the interior, marking a major renovation that transformed the space.
Inside are medieval religious artworks, including the Romanesque Rö Madonna from the early 13th century and carved wooden figures. These pieces show what mattered to people who worshipped here and how they expressed their faith through sculpture and carving.
Visitors can explore the cemetery with its older graves, offering a quiet walk among the headstones. The lychgate and bell tower at the entrance serve as clear landmarks and help you get oriented when you arrive.
The frescos display a rare scene depicting the story of the grateful dead, a narrative rarely seen in other churches of the region. Painted here too are Nordic saints whose images do not appear in neighboring structures.
