Skee Church, Medieval church in Strömstad Municipality, Sweden
Skee Church is a granite ecclesiastical building in Strömstad Municipality featuring a bell tower added in 1673 and extensions built during 1794-1795. The site encompasses the main structure and an adjacent cemetery, showing how the building grew to serve the local community over time.
The church was founded in the 11th century as a simple structure serving the area. Later expansions in the late 1700s reflected the need to accommodate a growing population and reflected changing architectural tastes of that period.
The church holds a black soapstone Madonna sculpture from the 13th century and an altarpiece from 1490, both representing medieval Swedish craftsmanship still visible to visitors today. These works give the interior its character and speak to artistic traditions that people valued and preserved across generations.
The church sits several kilometers east of Strömstad and can be reached through the Strömstads Pastorat office. It maintains seasonal opening hours in summer months, so checking current conditions before visiting is helpful.
The pulpit was created in 1671 as a gift from Sven Ranck, owner of Blomsholm manor, and remains among the building's most personal furnishings. This donation reflects how local estates were connected to the spiritual life of their surrounding communities.
