Björnerödspiggen, Television and observation tower in Vännäs, Sweden.
Björnerödspiggen is a television and broadcast tower in Vännäs consisting of a reinforced concrete base topped with a steel lattice structure. The tall mast rises over 320 meters and carries transmitting equipment for regional broadcasting throughout Värmland and beyond.
Construction began in the late 1950s and finished in 1960, a period when Sweden was rapidly expanding its broadcasting network nationwide. The tower marked an important step in modernizing communications infrastructure after World War II.
The tower shaped how people in surrounding areas accessed television and radio for generations, becoming a familiar landmark in the regional landscape. Its presence marks the transition from an era when broadcasting began connecting remote communities across Sweden.
The site is not open to visitors since it functions as critical telecommunications infrastructure with strict security measures in place. You can view and photograph the tower from a distance across the open surrounding landscape.
In 1988 the tower faced a crisis when accumulating ice threatened to bring it down, triggering an unusual emergency response. Helicopters sprayed hot water and glycol onto the frozen structure to prevent structural failure and save the installation.
