Tors fiske, Bronze fountain sculpture at Mariatorget, Stockholm.
Tors fiske is a bronze fountain sculpture at Mariatorget square depicting Thor in combat with the Midgard Serpent. Two prehistoric-looking water-spouting lizards flank the central mythological figure, creating an intricate composition with flowing water elements.
The work was created in 1903 by Swedish artist Anders Wissler as a gift from JP Holmberg. It emerged during a period when Stockholm was actively developing its public art.
The sculpture shows Thor from Nordic mythology as he confronts the Midgard Serpent with his weapon. This kind of mythological imagery reflects how Stockholm has long drawn on ancient stories to shape its public spaces.
The fountain sits in the center of Mariatorget square, making it simple to locate and view from all angles. Water effects are most active on warmer days and offer a pleasant spot to rest nearby.
The sculpture features an ornamental marble basin that incorporates Art Nouveau design principles, setting it apart from standard early 1900s fountain structures. This artistic approach makes the piece a notable example of the stylistic choices made during that era.
