Stockholm

Stockholm is an administrative unit in Sweden that stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Bridges and waterways connect the urban districts and shape the structure of the entire area.

The administrative structure received its current form in 1971 when integration with Stockholm County was completed. This reform introduced a unified governance system for all districts.

The municipality shares its name with the Swedish capital and forms its core area along the water. Many residents use boats or ferries as everyday transport between the different islands.

The public transport network Storstockholms Lokaltrafik serves nearly one million residents in urban and suburban areas. Visitors can move through the entire area using metro trains, buses and boats.

More than two fifths of the population hold post-secondary degrees, which is above the national average in Sweden. This high education rate is reflected in the many universities and research institutions.
