Riddarbron, Pontoon bridge in Norrmalm, Sweden
Riddarbron was a pontoon bridge that crossed Riddarfjärden, connecting Riddarholmen and Norrmalm in central Stockholm. The structure used floating platforms to support both vehicle and pedestrian traffic between these districts.
The bridge opened in 1954 to serve as a connecting route across central Stockholm. It was replaced by Centralbron in 1967 as the city modernized its infrastructure.
The bridge location offers direct views of Strömsborg building and represents the engineering methods used in Swedish urban development during the 1950s.
To understand this bridge's place in Stockholm's past, you can view the Riddarfjärden from nearby waterfront areas and imagine where it once spanned the water. Local museums and archives hold additional details about its operation and role.
What made this structure notable was its combination of pontoon and road bridge technologies, offering an innovative solution for Stockholm's rapid urban growth in the 1950s. This hybrid approach demonstrated how temporary-seeming designs could become embedded in permanent city systems.
