Picasso sculpture i Kristinehamn, Concrete sculpture at Lake Vänern, Kristinehamn, Sweden.
This 15-meter-tall concrete structure depicts a woman's profile made from two concrete slabs mounted on a central pillar at Vålösundet. The slabs feature an engraved pattern and stand directly along the shore of Lake Vänern.
This monumental sculpture was built in 1965 based on Pablo Picasso's design, realized by Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar. It became the first large-scale concrete sculpture worldwide based on Picasso's work.
The sculpture portrays a woman's profile cut into concrete using an innovative carving technique that Picasso and Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar created together. Visitors can observe how sunlight and shadow shift across the engraved surface during the day, constantly changing how the face looks.
The sculpture sits about 7 kilometers from Kristinehamn's center and can be reached via a waterfront path. Access is free and available daily without any fees or restrictions.
Picasso granted Kristinehamn municipality free rights to build this work without cost to the artist. The town later purchased the completed sculpture at a symbolic price, making it accessible public art for everyone.
