Almare-Stäkets borg, Medieval fortress ruins in Upplands-Bro Municipality, Sweden
Almare-Stäkets borg is a stone fortress ruin located on Stäksholmen island, strategically positioned to control the waterway between Stockholm and Uppsala. The site consists of a plateau-like hill with visible foundations and house remains concentrated in the northwestern section.
The fortress was built in the 12th century, destroyed in 1434 during conflicts, rebuilt by an archbishop in 1440, and finally demolished in 1517. These cycles of destruction and reconstruction reveal the turbulent political struggles of medieval Sweden.
The fortress was a symbol of power struggles between the Swedish church and the crown during medieval times. Visitors can still sense the religious importance of the site through its location and remaining structures.
The ruins are located on an island and can be reached by water or via accessible pathways from the shore. Wear suitable footwear as the ground is uneven and can be slippery in places.
Underwater archaeological expeditions found carved stones and wooden remains in the surrounding waters, with tree rings revealing they came from the 14th and 15th centuries. These discoveries provide rare insight into how the fortress was built and destroyed.
