Blå lagunen, Munsön, Lake and beach area in Ekerö Municipality, Sweden.
Blå lagunen is a small lake on the island of Munsön, in Ekerö Municipality west of Stockholm, known for its unusually blue-green water. It has a sandy beach along one side and is surrounded by trees, making it one of the more popular swimming spots in the area.
The basin was formed by an old limestone quarry that filled with water after mining operations stopped. Over time, what had been an industrial site slowly became one of the better-known swimming spots around Stockholm.
The name "Blå lagunen" means "Blue Lagoon" in Swedish, which reflects the striking aqua color of the water caused by the white limestone bed beneath it. Visitors often notice how different the color looks compared to typical Swedish lakes, giving it an almost tropical appearance.
The lake is on the island of Munsön and can be reached from Stockholm by public transit, though a short walk from the nearest bus stop is needed. It tends to get crowded on summer weekends, so a weekday visit or an early start is worth considering.
Despite its modest size, the lake reaches a depth of around 21 meters in some spots, which is unusual for a former quarry of this kind. That depth helps keep the water noticeably cooler than most outdoor pools, even in the middle of summer.
