Studenovodské vodopády, Multi-cascade waterfall system in High Tatras, Slovakia.
Studenovodské Waterfalls form a sequence of four cascades that flow along the Zimna Woda stream through granite rock formations over approximately 1.5 kilometers. Each waterfall differs in size and shape, creating distinct views as you move through the ravine.
These waterfalls became one of the earliest visited sites in the High Tatras, drawing mountain hikers from the 1800s onward. The construction of the Rainer shelter later helped develop the area and make it more accessible to visitors.
The four waterfalls carry Slovak names that describe their distinct forms: Malý means Small, Skrytý means Hidden, Veľký means Great, and Dlhý means Long. As you walk among them, you notice how each name fits its appearance.
Access the waterfalls via marked trails starting from Starý Smokovec, where you can find parking and facilities. The walking conditions are best from May through October when snow clears and weather is more stable in the mountains.
The flowing water and stones in the Zimna Woda have carved natural basins and deep pockets into the granite bedrock, forming smooth rock sculptures beneath the cascades. These geological formations take many years to develop as water gradually wears away the stone.
