Roman inscription in Trenčín, Roman inscription on cliff face in Trenčín, Slovakia
Laugaricio is a Roman inscription carved into a cliff face in Trenčín and now protected behind glass on the second floor of Hotel Elizabeth. The Latin text records the presence of 855 soldiers from the Second Legion stationed at this frontier post.
The inscription dates to around 179/180 CE, when Roman commander Marcus Valerius Maximianus led military operations against Germanic tribes in the region. It marks a moment when Rome demonstrated its military strength at the northern edge of the continent.
The inscription reveals how Rome displayed its military power and territorial reach across Central Europe at the edge of its domain. It shows the importance of documenting military presence as a way to establish authority in distant frontier regions.
To view the inscription, you need to enter Hotel Elizabeth at Mierové Square, where it is displayed behind protective glass on the second floor. The visit is possible during regular hotel hours and gives you a close look at this ancient Roman carving.
The carving has survived nearly two thousand years in remarkably good condition, still showing clear Latin letters and details from the original work. This exceptional preservation makes it one of the most readable Roman inscriptions in Central Europe.
