The Pauline order initiated construction of the church and monastery in 1736 following their acquisition of the Virgin Mary statue in 1733.
The church holds the distinction of being Slovakia's first basilica minor, designated by Pope Paul VI to honor its religious and architectural significance.

The main altar displays the statue of Virgin Mary of Seven Grievances on a red marble structure, accompanied by six side altars with paintings by J.L. Kracker.
