Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Minor basilica in Šaštín-Stráže, Slovakia.

The Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Baroque church building in Šaštín-Stráže featuring twin towers and a striking red marble altar as its central focus. The interior contains six side altars decorated with paintings, creating a layered visual experience throughout the worship space.

The Pauline order acquired a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1736 and soon after began construction of the basilica, which quickly became a major pilgrimage site. The consecration ceremony drew prominent imperial figures, solidifying the church's importance in the region.

The basilica serves as Slovakia's national shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary in her role of Seven Sorrows, attracting pilgrims who come seeking spiritual comfort and prayer. People gather here to participate in religious processions and celebrations that mark important dates throughout the year.

The basilica is open to visitors throughout the week, though hours differ between weekdays and weekends to accommodate religious services. It is advisable to plan your visit during standard opening times to ensure full access to the church interior.

Pope Paul VI granted this church the official designation of a minor basilica, making it the first to receive this honor in Slovakia. This recognition highlights its distinguished role in the country's religious landscape.
