Dnipro Child Railway, Children's railway in Dnipro, Ukraine
The Dnipro Child Railway is a narrow-gauge railway for children located in Hloba Park in Dnipro, Ukraine. The line runs in a loop of about 1.2 miles (2 km) and includes one intermediate stop, two short concrete tunnels, and a road crossing.
The railway opened in 1936, making it the first children's railway in Ukraine and the second in the entire Soviet Union. It was built as a joint project by students and young workers who gave up their weekends to complete it.
The railway runs mostly on weekends and during summer months, from May through October. Arriving in the morning gives you time to walk the park before or after the ride.
The first locomotive for the line was built by young workers at a steam engine repair plant, not by a professional factory. To this day, inspectors still punch tickets by hand using small clippers, just as on a full-size railway.
