Krasnohirsk Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Zolotonosha Raion, Ukraine.
Krasnohirsk Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex set on a hill above the Zolotonosha River in Zolotonosha Raion, Ukraine. A stone church dating to 1859 stands at its center, surrounded by other structures that make up the working monastic grounds.
A monk from Constantinople founded this complex at the end of the 16th century, beginning with a cave dug into what was called Red Hill. Over the following centuries, stone buildings gradually replaced the earlier structures, giving the site the form it holds today.
The monastery keeps a revered icon that draws Orthodox pilgrims from across the country to pray before it. Those who visit the grounds today can witness an active monastic community where religious rites and daily life continue side by side.
The monastery sits on a hill, so visitors should expect slopes and uneven ground when walking around the grounds. A visit between spring and autumn works well, as the site and the river views below are easier to enjoy in dry weather.
The name of the monastery comes from the Slavic words for red hill, referring to the color of the soil found on this particular rise. This link between the ground itself and the name of the place is still visible when looking at the earth around the hill today.
