Association of American Universities, University association in Washington DC, US
The Association of American Universities is a consortium of 71 research institutions in the United States and Canada based in Washington DC. The organization focuses on coordinating standards for doctoral programs and promoting scientific collaboration among North America's leading universities.
Fourteen universities created the association in 1900 to improve and standardize the quality of doctoral training in the United States. Over the course of the 20th century membership expanded gradually and later came to include Canadian institutions as well.
The name emerged in 1900 to bring together the nation's leading research-focused institutions and promote their shared academic goals. Today members work together to set quality standards in higher education and strengthen the importance of scientific work in society.
The main activities take place through regular meetings and joint initiatives among member universities, not through visitor offerings at the Washington headquarters. Those interested in university research policy can review the organization's publications and position statements online.
Only two institutions outside the United States belong to the association, both from Canada. Admission of new members requires approval from three quarters of existing member institutions, which sharply limits access.
