Planet Word, Language museum in Northwest Washington, United States
Planet Word fills the historic Franklin School building with interactive exhibits exploring languages and words across two floors. The spaces are colorfully designed and invite visitors to discover, speak, and interact with language in multiple ways.
The Franklin School building was erected in 1869 and served as a classroom facility before transforming into this museum. The former school retains its original character while gaining new purpose as a language and culture institution.
The museum displays how language appears in everyday objects and art, where words take shape and carry meaning. Visitors can observe how people express and share their thoughts and feelings through language.
The museum sits centrally in the city and is easily reached by public transit or on foot, especially if you are in the Downtown area. Plan to spend two to three hours to explore the exhibits at a relaxed pace and engage with the different stations.
A large interactive wall responds to visitors' voices, bringing their words to life in unexpected ways. This impressive installation is one of the main attractions that many discover only when entering the right room.
