Shelburne Museum, Art museum in Shelburne, US.
Shelburne Museum is an art museum on 45 acres with 39 exhibition buildings displaying over 150,000 works of American art, design, and historical objects. The collection ranges from paintings and textiles to furniture and decorative pieces from different periods.
Electra Havemeyer Webb founded the museum in 1947 and relocated 25 historic buildings from New England and New York to this site. This architectural relocation created a unique campus for preserving American cultural heritage.
The museum displays American folk art including carved decoys, weathervanes, and circus figurines that reflect the daily life and craftsmanship of earlier generations. These objects tell the story of the skills and creativity of ordinary people who made them.
The grounds are large and spread out over a wide area. It is helpful to plan time for your visit and wear comfortable shoes, as there is considerable walking involved.
The grounds feature the Ticonderoga, a 220-foot paddle-wheel steamboat recognized as a National Historic Landmark and permanently displayed on the property. This rare vessel is one of the oldest surviving passenger steamships in America.
