The South Park Commissioners acquired the land in 1904 and completed the park development in 1905 at a construction cost of $220,000.
The park honors Philip Danforth Armour through its name, recognizing his contributions to Chicago's industrial development and educational institutions.
The fieldhouse provides fitness facilities, sports programs, after-school activities, and summer camps for local residents throughout the year.
President Theodore Roosevelt acknowledged the park's establishment as a significant civic achievement in any American city during 1906.
