Grand Ledge Chair Company Plant
Grand Ledge Chair Company Plant, Furniture factory in Grand Ledge, Michigan, US
The Grand Ledge Chair Company Plant comprises three buildings and four structures on a seven-acre site along the Grand River. The main building stretches 353 feet (108 meters) in length and 50 feet (15 meters) in width, constructed with cream-colored brick and punctuated by large windows for natural light.
The plant was built in 1906 and operated as a furniture manufacturing facility through 1981. During its peak years, it employed up to 225 workers, making it a major part of the local economy.
The factory supplied chairs to major institutions across the United States, including Michigan State University and the Library of Congress. These contracts demonstrate how this plant served important American buildings and organizations.
The site is easily accessible on its spacious grounds, and the exterior areas offer good views of the brick architecture. The large windows and riverside location make the complex pleasant to explore in any season.
This is the last remaining furniture manufacturing complex from the early 1900s in the Grand Ledge-Lansing region. Its survival makes it a rare testament to this vanished industry.
