Emery Houses, Historical residence in Downtown Lansing, United States.
The Emery Houses are two brick duplexes with Second Empire design features located on West Ottawa Street in downtown Lansing. They have stone foundations and decorative tin cornices, with distinctive roof lines that give each building its own character.
Sarah Emery and her son Archibald purchased the land in 1885 and built these residences between 1888 and 1889. The structures were completed during a period of significant social change and growing political activism in the United States.
The property reflects the life of Sarah E. Van De Vort Emery, who lived here while becoming known as a speaker and writer for the Populist movement during the late 1800s. Her work and residence made this address part of local political history.
The buildings now serve as residential units and office spaces, showing how historic structures have been adapted for modern use. Visitors should view these properties from the street, as they remain in active private use.
One building features an octagonal bay window while the other displays symmetrical corner bays, making each structure visually distinct. These architectural details help visitors easily tell the two properties apart when walking past.
