Gorman Park, Urban park in Washington Heights, Manhattan, US
Gorman Park spans just under 2 hectares (1.89 acres) between Broadway and Wadsworth Terrace with steep elevation changes throughout. Stone stairs and paths connect the different levels and form the main access routes through the space.
The land was donated to the city in 1929 following the death of the woman it was named after. The donation sparked a dispute over the estate that lasted several years.
The upper plaza connects different neighborhoods and shows how the Washington Heights community uses its green spaces. People gather here to enjoy views and spend time together.
The upper section is currently accessible and offers the main visiting experience. The lower portion remains closed for necessary repairs, so plan to explore the upper area.
The steep elevation drops of roughly 30 meters (100 feet) required specialized engineering even when first built. This challenge continues to shape how the park is maintained and restored today.
