Great Onyx Cave

Great Onyx Cave is a show cave featuring underground passages carved by water flowing through limestone layers. The walls display white calcite formations and coral-like structures that line the route visitors walk through.

The cave was discovered in 1971 and later became a tourist attraction within the national park system. Geological formations reveal millions of years of water erosion within the limestone bedrock.

The cave formations reflect Kentucky's geological heritage, with extensive limestone passages shaped by water erosion over millions of years.

Wear sturdy shoes because the floor is uneven and sometimes damp or slippery. The temperature stays cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket keeps you comfortable during your time underground.

The waterfall wall features mineral deposits arranged in patterns resembling frozen cascades of water. This unusual rock formation has become one of the most photographed spots for visitors exploring the cave.
