Harmonie State Park, Nature reserve and state park in New Harmony, Indiana

Harmonie State Park is a nature reserve and Indiana state park along the Wabash River, near the town of New Harmony. The park contains wooded hills, small streams, campgrounds, rental cabins, picnic areas, and a Nature Center.

The area around the park was home in the early 1800s to two distinct communities: the Rappites, a religious group, and later the followers of social reformer Robert Owen. New Harmony, the nearby town, became one of the first places in the country to set up an organized public school system.

The trails and river here are used regularly by local families for hiking, biking, and fishing. The Nature Center offers displays and occasional talks that help visitors connect with the plants and animals of this part of Indiana.

The park welcomes both day visitors and overnight guests, with campsites and cabins available to reserve in advance. A boat launch on the Wabash River lets visitors put small boats and canoes directly into the water from within the park.

Thomas Say, considered the first scientist to formally study insects in North America, lived in New Harmony in the 1820s. A firefly species he described there was named Indiana's state insect in 2018.
