Hidden Springs State Forest, State forest in Shelby County, Illinois, US
Hidden Springs State Forest is a state-managed forest covering about 1,200 acres in Shelby County near Clarksburg. The land features flat sections along Richland Creek and steep hillsides that create varied forest environments.
The forest property was transferred to state forestry in 1960 after original plans changed due to construction of Shelbyville Reservoir. This change of direction allowed the area to become a public forest instead.
Volunteer groups help manage the seed collection work that happens here throughout the year. This hands-on involvement shows how visitors can participate in the forest's daily operations.
The forest sits south of Mattoon and is easiest to reach via Route 32 from Strasburg. Plan to visit during daylight hours and bring proper footwear for the varied terrain.
The name comes from seven natural springs that early settlers once relied on for drinking water. Though now covered by sediment, these hidden springs remain part of the forest's story.
