The Cross at the Crossroads, Religious monument in Effingham County, United States.
The Cross at the Crossroads is a large steel structure reaching 198 feet (60 meters) high with arms spreading 113 feet (34 meters) across. The monument is constructed from approximately 18 tons of steel securely anchored in a concrete foundation.
Construction began in January 2001 after John and Fran Schultz visited a similar structure in Groom, Texas and drew inspiration from its design. The project was developed to give Illinois its own comparable religious landmark.
The ten commandments monuments surrounding the base display religious messages that visitors encounter while exploring the site. They form a circle around the central structure and invite contemplation of their teachings.
The site is easy to reach and features a welcome center where volunteer staff are on hand to provide information and assistance. Parking is available near the base of the monument for convenient access to the structure and surrounding monuments.
The monument sits at the intersection of Interstate 57 and 70, serving as a recognizable landmark for millions of travelers passing through each year. Its visibility from the highway makes it a notable landmark in the flat landscape of central Illinois.
