Embarras River Bridge, Historic road bridge in Jasper County, Illinois, United States.
The Embarras River Bridge is a steel crossing spanning approximately 148 feet (45 meters) over the water near Newton. The structure uses Pratt truss design and carries Wade Township Road 164 between adjacent areas.
Chicago Bridge & Iron built this crossing in 1890 to replace an aging wooden bridge at the river crossing. Steel construction was the modern solution of that time for safe travel.
The crossing links two rural communities and shows the engineering skills valued in the late 1800s. Today hikers and cyclists use the bridge regularly while experiencing the quieter pace of this region.
After renovations completed in 2015, the structure is in good condition and functions as part of a regional trail for walkers and cyclists. The crossing remains open year-round with access through quiet rural surroundings.
This structure is the only one of its specific design in the county and ranks among the oldest surviving steel truss bridges in the state. The engineering represents an important chapter in early American bridge building.
