Henry Montague House
Henry Montague House, Greek Revival residence in Kalamazoo, United States.
The Henry Montague House is a two-story brick building in Kalamazoo with a balanced front facade and large windows featuring square frames. The central section steps forward and is framed by a broad veranda.
The building was constructed in 1861 and reflects the architecture of that era. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 because of its connection to local politician Henry Montague.
The residence served as a gathering place for people opposing slavery during the 1800s. Visitors and activists found a space to meet and discuss reform movements that would shape the region.
The building now serves as office space for Western Michigan University and preserves its historical details. Check ahead before visiting since this is an active office building.
The building blends two distinct architectural styles in an unexpected way. You can see both classical columns alongside decorative Italian-inspired eaves and a distinctive sloped roof.
