Iron Clad Building

Iron Clad Building, Cast iron landmark building in Cooperstown, New York.

The Iron Clad Building on Main Street is a commercial structure with a cast iron facade arranged in horizontal levels. The windows are large and evenly spaced, with decorative details that show the technical capabilities of metal fabrication.

The building was constructed in 1862 as part of a new movement in American construction that used cast iron for commercial buildings. This was a turning point because factories could manufacture the elements and they were then assembled on site.

The building displays commercial storefronts with a mid-19th century architectural approach using new production methods of that era. It shows visitors how industrial materials changed the appearance and construction of downtown shopping districts.

The building sits centrally on Main Street and is easy to reach on foot, with parking available on nearby streets. The facade is visible from outside and requires no special access to view the architectural details.

This building is one of only five remaining structures created by James Bogardus, the pioneer who introduced this new building technique in America. Its cast iron facade was assembled on site in 1862 and shows what this early industrial approach to construction looked like.
