James River State Park is a state park and designated International Dark Sky Park in Buckingham County, Virginia, stretching along the James River with riverfront meadows, woodlands, and open grasslands. The grounds include campgrounds, multi-use trails for walking and cycling, and direct access to the riverbank.
The land was long used by the Monacan people for hunting and fishing before the park opened in 1999. Remnants of the old Kanawha Canal, which once used the river for transport, are still visible on the property today.
The hillside amphitheater with its lit stage hosts educational programs and outdoor events during the warmer months. Visitors can attend guided evening sessions that take advantage of the exceptionally dark skies overhead.
The park has five campground areas for different needs, along with trails open to both walkers and cyclists. Because artificial lighting is kept to a minimum, clear evenings are a good time to visit if you want to watch the night sky.
The park uses controlled burns to maintain its open grasslands, which is a rare practice in the eastern half of the United States. This keeps the landscape more open than most parks in the region, offering views that are hard to find elsewhere in this part of the country.
