James River State Park

James River State Park is a nature preserve in Virginia spanning about 1,600 acres along the James River with varied landscapes. The grounds include riverfront meadows with native grasses, multi-use trails, and campgrounds offering different accommodation styles.

The land was historically a hunting and fishing ground for the Monacan Indians before the park opened in 1999. Remnants of the old Kanawha Canal system remain visible on the property.

The hillside amphitheater with its lighted stage creates a gathering space where the park hosts educational programs and events throughout the warmer months.

The park offers five different campgrounds ranging from basic sites to those with water and electric hookups, plus 22 miles of trails for walking and biking. Visitors will find minimal artificial lighting, which makes stargazing especially rewarding here.

The preserve uses controlled burns to maintain its grassland ecosystems, a practice that sets it apart in the Eastern United States. This method keeps the open spaces clear and allows for a rare view of natural landscapes in this region.
