James River State Park

The 1,561-acre park stretches along the James River, featuring diverse landscapes with native warm season grasses covering 130 acres of riverfront fields.

The park opened in 1999 on land where Monacan Indians previously hunted and fished, with portions containing remnants of the historic Kanawha Canal system.

The natural hillside amphitheater with its lighted stage hosts educational programs and events for up to 500 visitors during warmer months.

Five campgrounds offer various accommodation options, from primitive sites to spaces with water and electric hookups, alongside 22 miles of multi-use trails.

The park maintains its grassland ecosystem through prescribed fires, creating an environment that stands apart in the Eastern United States.
