Jones Beach State Park, State park on Jones Beach Island, Nassau County, United States
Jones Beach State Park is a coastal park along more than six miles of Atlantic shoreline on Long Island, offering several bathing areas with breakwaters and a wide range of water sports. The central section includes a boardwalk, a fishing pier, and sports fields, while quieter stretches extend further west and east.
The park opened in 1929 as part of an ambitious plan to give New York City residents access to seaside recreation. During World War II, the site served as a coastal observation post before returning to leisure use afterward.
The Jones Beach Theater, an outdoor amphitheater within the park grounds, presents concerts and performances throughout the summer season.
Facilities include lifeguard supervision during summer, changing rooms with showers, and several food stands along the beach sections. Parking lots are located near the entrances, but spaces fill quickly on weekends and holidays.
The original design followed classical architecture with a distinctive water tower that serves as a central landmark for the grounds. On clear days, you sometimes see school groups conducting biology or ecology lessons along the dunes.
