Nassau County

Nassau County occupies the western portion of Long Island, stretching between Long Island Sound to the north and the Atlantic shoreline to the south. The territory includes three main towns and dozens of smaller villages and hamlets that spread across coastal and inland areas.

The area separated from Queens in 1899 when the western portion became part of New York City the year before. The new administrative unit grew rapidly during the following decades as suburbs expanded across Long Island.

This suburban area developed a lifestyle centered on local communities, beaches, and school districts that shape daily life. Residents frequently visit town parks, waterfront promenades, and farmers markets where neighbors gather and share seasonal traditions.

The Long Island Rail Road connects the area to Manhattan, while several highways run westward toward the city. Public beaches along both the northern and southern shorelines offer access during warmer months.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy trains future officers for commercial shipping and naval reserve service. This federal academy sits along the waterfront at Kings Point and is one of five federal service academies in the country.
