Bethpage Black Course, Public golf course in Farmingdale, New York, United States.
Bethpage Black Course is a public golf course in Farmingdale, New York, that stretches about 4.25 miles (6.8 kilometers) across rolling terrain. The playing holes wind through hilly grounds with narrow fairways, small greens, and deep bunkers.
Joseph H. Burbeck designed the original layout in 1936, during a period of public works projects across the United States. The grounds were later adapted for the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009.
The layout was refined by A. W. Tillinghast, who also designed other well-known courses across the United States. Golfers from different countries come here to play on the same grounds where major tournaments have taken place.
The grounds allow walking only, with no carts permitted during play. Reservations are required in advance, and fees vary depending on whether you live in New York State or not.
A sign at the first tee has warned since the 1980s that this course is suited only for very skilled players. The sign has become a well-known symbol of the difficulty level here.
