Bethpage State Park, Public golf complex in Farmingdale, New York, United States.
Bethpage State Park is a large golf facility with five eighteen-hole courses in Farmingdale on Long Island. The groomed grounds roll over gentle hills and are lined with dense stands of trees that serve as natural dividers between the different fairways.
The state acquired the land during the nineteen thirties and built golf courses to create work during the economic depression. Over the following years additional courses were added and the facility expanded several times until it reached its present form.
The name derives from the Dutch word for meetinghouse, a reference to Quaker gatherings in the area during colonial times. Today visitors see golfers walking the fairways and families using the park for picnics and outdoor activities beyond the courses.
The most famous course requires advance booking and proof of skill level, while the others are easier to access. Those who arrive early often find available tee times on the less popular courses.
A single designer was responsible for three of the five courses and also modified the fourth, giving the facility a consistent character. The courses were graded in difficulty so players of different abilities can find appropriate challenges.
