Youngs Memorial Cemetery, Presidential cemetery in Oyster Bay Cove, New York, United States
Youngs Memorial Cemetery is a cemetery in Oyster Bay Cove in the state of New York where about 450 individuals are buried. The graves are marked with stone markers and wooden crosses spread across the hilly terrain of the grounds.
The Youngs family established the cemetery in the 1660s when they settled in this part of Long Island. In 1900 the grounds received an official charter and became the burial place of President Theodore Roosevelt in 1919.
Members from several generations of the Youngs family rest here alongside neighbors from the village who contributed to the community through their work on farms and in small trade businesses across the region. The names on the gravestones reflect this local rootedness and show how closely families remained connected over generations.
Visitors can park on a gravel path leading to the entrance and explore the grounds on foot. Volunteer helpers support maintenance and document the burial sites so the area remains in good condition throughout the year.
Thomas Youngs, who worked as private secretary to Theodore Roosevelt, transformed the family cemetery into a non-profit corporation to secure its preservation for future generations. This legal structure allowed donations and volunteer support to be managed on an ongoing basis.
