Kanawha State Forest

Kanawha State Forest is a large woodland area in West Virginia covering over 9,000 acres of dense forest across rolling hills and valleys. The property contains an extensive trail system and multiple recreation facilities designed for outdoor activities.

This area was once a coal mining region until the Civilian Conservation Corps began restoration work in 1937. Industrial structures were gradually removed and the land was allowed to return to forest.

The forest draws birdwatchers during spring migration, when dozens of bird species move through the canopy. Visitors often spend quiet mornings listening and watching for different calls and movements in the trees.

The site offers camping areas, picnic spaces, a swimming pool, and numerous trails suited to different ability levels. Wear sturdy footwear since paths wind through hilly terrain and uneven ground.

The Spotted Salamander Trail features braille interpretation signs along the path for visitors with vision loss. This approach demonstrates how nature access can be designed to include people with different abilities.
