Llenroc House, Gothic Revival mansion in Ithaca, United States
Llenroc House is a Gothic Revival mansion located near the Cornell University campus in Ithaca. The structure features three-foot thick masonry walls, turrets, and occupies a substantial lot, while the interior is decorated with Georgia Pine, black walnut wood, and leaded glass mirrors.
The building was constructed between 1869 and 1876 for Ezra Cornell, the founder of Cornell University. The Albany architecture firm Nichols & Brown designed the structure, establishing it as a notable example of their work.
The house displays the motto 'True and Firm' carved above its entrance, reflecting the values of its original owner. European craftsmen left their mark in carved details and imported fireplaces throughout the interior.
Access to this private residence is limited since it serves as a fraternity house for students. The best way to experience the property is to view the exterior architecture and grounds from public areas nearby.
The structure incorporates local bluestone and limestone sourced from the Ithaca area. These regional materials are balanced by fine European imports inside, creating a contrast between local and international elements.
