900 Stewart Avenue, Egyptian Revival building in Ithaca, United States
The building at 900 Stewart Avenue stands on a natural ledge 50 feet below street level, directly overlooking Fall Creek and Ithaca Falls.
Construction of this Egyptian-style structure began in 1925 after the Sphinx Head Society of Cornell University raised 25,000 dollars for their meeting place.
The structure features stone pillars, a rectangular main room with sconce lighting, and represents one of two Egyptian Revival buildings in Tompkins County.
The property includes modern security systems, renovated windows, skylights, and a teak penthouse addition that expanded the living space considerably.
Renowned astronomer Carl Sagan acquired this former secret society meeting place in 1981, transforming it into his personal residence with architectural modifications.
