Madison Wetland Management District

The Madison Wetland Management District covers protected wetlands and grasslands in the Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota. The area spans roughly 129,700 acres and includes facilities for visitors to explore on foot while observing wildlife and plants.

The district was founded in 1969 to protect wetlands during the period of heavy agricultural development across the Great Plains. This conservation effort grew from the realization that the region's special habitats needed to be saved for the future.

The visitor center displays work by nine South Dakota artists alongside exhibits about local wildlife and conservation practices. This mix shows how the region connects nature with local creativity.

The district sits about 2 miles east of Madison and is reached via Highway 34 and Highway 19. Visitors explore on foot to hunt, fish, take photographs, or watch wildlife in their natural setting.

The district manages roughly 38,500 acres of government-owned land while protecting additional areas through agreements with the state and private owners. This approach blends direct public ownership with voluntary partnerships to safeguard the land.
