Madonna Della Strada Chapel, Art Deco church building at Loyola University Chicago, United States.
Madonna Della Strada Chapel is an Art Deco church on the campus of Loyola University Chicago, sitting along the shore of Lake Michigan. Its limestone facade features a rose window and carved stone blocks showing the symbols of the Four Evangelists.
The chapel was completed in 1939, funded through a joint effort by Loyola University and its alumni during the Great Depression. Architect Andrew Rebori shaped a building that brings together traditional church forms and the clean lines of Art Deco.
The stained glass windows inside the chapel each represent a different school within the university, mixing academic symbols with religious imagery. Walking through the interior, visitors can read these windows almost like a map of the university itself.
The chapel sits on the lakefront campus of Loyola University and is generally open daily for visitors who want to look around. Coming outside of service times gives more space to walk through the interior and take in the details at your own pace.
The names of notable Jesuits from history are carved into the roofline of the building, a detail that most visitors walking past simply miss. Stepping back from the facade and looking up is the easiest way to spot these inscriptions clearly.
